Message from the dean for prospective students

Thank you for visiting the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. We are one of America's top schools of public health and the top public school of public health. Students are number 1 here! And that's true whether they are here on campus or are distance education learners.

At Carolina's School of Public Health, you will be taught by some of the finest teachers/researchers in the world. You will have unsurpassed access to faculty and staff. We work with people across campus and around the world. Our students have a learning experience that is one of the very finest anywhere.

Our students have remarkable opportunities to be part of research teams locally and globally. Recent graduates worked on water problems in India, Cambodia and the Dominican Republic, maternal and child health projects in Mexico, AIDS research in Africa and cancer prevention research in North Carolina. Last summer, two groups of our students were part of interdisciplinary teams solving urgent problems in India. They returned full of enthusiasm about the experience.

If you join us, you will have the chance to pursue your dreams, wherever they may take you. We not only conduct ground-breaking research; we also translate that research into programs and practices that improve people's health and lives. We share a passion - to solve public health problems both locally and globally.

Our state-of-the-art research facilities are nestled in one of the most beautiful, tree-lined campuses in the country.  Once you have felt the warmth of the brilliant Carolina blue sky, even in February, it is hard to imagine being anywhere else.

As inviting as our campus is, our laboratories and classrooms aren't just here - they're across North Carolina and all over the world. Many students take classes remotely. Some come to campus once or twice a year or maybe not at all. All share the Carolina experience - a deep commitment to the finest teaching, research and practice.

In 2007, Dr. Dennis and Joan Gillings gave our school the gift of a lifetime when they pledged $50M to enable us to accelerate solutions to public health problems. On September 26, 2008, we became the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.  Our students have new opportunities because of their gift.  Students can be part of Gillings Innovation Labs (GILs), where they learn and train in interdisciplinary teams focused on solving some of the world's biggest public health problems with some of the best faculty, staff and students anywhere. Students are a vital part of most GILs. See www.sph.unc.edu/accelerate for more information and meet some of the GILs' leaders on our website. Students also can learn from Gillings Visiting Professors like Leah Devlin, DDS, MPH, Don Holzworth and Sheila Leatherman. Starting in 2010, there'll also be new scholarships for students and dissertation awards.

Please explore our School through our Web site and call or e-mail us with your questions. Whether you choose to join us or another school, I wish you success on your journey to become a public health leader. The world needs you.

Warmly, Barbara K. Rimer
