The School of Public Health, in collaboration with UNC Information Technology Services (ITS), has opened new computer laboratory and classroom spaces in 201 and 201A Rosenau Hall. The updated space and equipment replace the computer lab previously housed in 2307 and 2308 McGavran-Greenberg Hall.

Felicia Mebane, PhD, MSPH, assistant dean for students at the School, says the new computer lab space provides an invaluable resource for public health students and students in nearby schools.

Mebane said the computer lab facilitates students' access to training materials, e-mail and other important resources -- and is in a better, more comfortable space.

Sixty computer stations and two laser jet printers are available in the laboratory and classroom. Compared to the windowless laboratory in McGavran-Greenberg Hall, the new, sun-filled lab is a much more pleasant place to work.

Students also seem excited about the new facility.

Convenience is also important to Kirkland Lynch, a senior BSPH student in health policy and administration. "Students who need to complete school work between classes, or need access to a laser printer, or need to find a place where they can focus -- late at night or away from distractions -- all use the computer lab," Lynch says.  "Without it, students would be forced to use [another, less reliable lab] or spend a bunch of money on private computer amenities."

Various problems delayed an earlier opening of the new computer area, and there still may be minor "bugs" to fix during the inaugural period.  Mebane asks that students be patient during the transition and to offer their feedback on the new labs through the School's Student Hotlink.

The lab is open seven days a week. Hours of operation are available online.
