Gillings Gift funds new dissertation award and scholarships for incoming students
November 06, 2009

The UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health has announced two new programs to support students at the School, both funded through a $50 million gift to the School from Dennis and Joan Gillings.

Dissertation awards

Up to two dissertation awards will be granted to current doctoral candidates at the School whose work has strong potential for public health impact. The  Schoolwide Student Awards Committee will solicit and review applications, and the $5,000 award(s) will be presented in spring 2010.

"These awards will recognize doctoral candidates whose dissertations have the potential to help solve important public health problems," said Julie MacMillan, MPH, managing director of Carolina Public Health Solutions, the unit that manages the Gillings gift.

Funding for new students

Any student applying to a graduate degree program in the School will be eligible to receive merit-based scholarship support. The current round of scholarships will be available for students applying in 2009-2010 for enrollment in 2010-2011. The School plans to make funding pools available each year.

The School's academic departments and the Public Health Leadership Program will consider applications and make funding decisions.

"For us to continue to recruit and train a diverse group of world-class students, we must be able to provide the kinds of financial support that will both give us a competitive edge and demonstrate our commitment to students," said Felicia Mebane, PhD, the School's assistant dean of student affairs.  "These awards are a great contribution toward helping us meet this critical part of our mission."

Details of these and other awards are available online. Information also is available through our department landing pages.  Application forms for the dissertation award will be posted on the School's Web site by Nov. 13.
