Ten graduate students at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health have received the inaugural Gillings Student Merit Scholarships. The scholarships were established to help the School recruit graduate students with exceptional promise and potential.

 

The 2010 scholarship recipients are:

• Maura C. Allaire (Environmental Sciences and Engineering)
• Kapuaola Gellert (Epidemiology)
• Jennifer Moore Moss (Health Behavior and Health Education)
• Sarah B. Lesesne (Health Policy and Management)
• Vann R. Newkirk (Health Policy and Management)
• Alane Murdock Kasrawi (Maternal and Child Health)
• Eva Erber (Nutrition)
• Heidi A. Harkins (Public Health Leadership Program)
• Fiona A. Hahn (Public Health Leadership Program)
  

The Gillings Student Merit Scholarships are made possible through a $50 million gift to the School from Dennis and Joan Gillings. School leaders plan to make annual funding available for the awards.

"The School's degree-granting units considered a highly competitive pool of applicants in making funding decisions this academic year," said Julie Macmillan, MPH, director of Carolina Public Health Solutions, the office that oversees distribution of the Gillings Gift funds. "The caliber of this year's award recipients is exceptional."
