 The Rogers-Eubanks neighborhood in Orange County, N.C., has housed the county landfill since 1972, and many residents are concerned that it may be contaminating their drinking water. Public health students investigated the residents' concerns and surveyed the water and sanitation infrastructure in response.
The Gillings School of Global Public Health is committed to public health service and practice in North Carolina, the United States and around the world. The North Carolina Institute for Public Health (NCIPH), the school's service arm, interacts with practitioners every day, helping them serve their constituents and safeguard the public's health. NCIPH provides training for thousands of frontline public health professionals each year and enhances organizational effectiveness for health agencies and organizations with its consulting and evaluation services. The Institute is nationally recognized for its preparedness systems research and its Active Living by Design program that supports healthy lifestyles.

Management Academy teams continue to make things happen
Paula Black, a personal health services administrator in North Carolina's Gaston County Health Department, emailed us recently. "The Highland Health Center is right on schedule--we anticipate our Grand Opening summer 2010." Black was a member of a community team that attended the Institute's Management Academy for Public Health (MAPH), a nine-month program combining onsite retreats with team "homework" to complete a business plan addressing a local public health need.
