Here, School of Public Health students Sarah Radke (Epidemiology) and Bahby Banks (Health Behavior and Health Education) take a break with Professor Steven Meshnick at the 2006 Malawi-UNC Public Health Summer Institute Program.

Dr. Melnick's research focuses on malaria during pregnancy in Malawi, mother-to-child transmission of HIV and drug resistance.

“I think he's an excellent advisor.  He goes out of his way to help and he's great to work with."
–Ella Nkhoma, PhD student, Biostatistics

“Steve has a genuine interest in the academic and professional growth of students at UNC School of Public Health.  He has a great deal of passion for his work and he brings a great deal of real world experience to the classroom--both of which makes learning a much more enriching experience. He has brought [further] attention to the importance of global health to students at UNC, and he also encourages multidisciplinary collaboration among students. Steve has developed programs to support this effort (i.e the UNC University of Malawi Summer Public Health Institute), and students from various backgrounds with varying interests have had the opportunity to conduct research internationally.  These students have a better sense of the role of research in international public health, more importantly, THEIR role as researcher in public health.”

–Bahby Banks, PhD student, Health Behavior and Health Education
